Medical Office Administration A.A.S.

This curriculum prepares individuals for employment in medical and other health-care related offices.

Coursework will include medical terminology; information systems; office management; medical coding, billing and insurance; legal and ethical issues; and formatting and word processing. Students will learn administrative and support functions and develop skills applicable in medical environments.

Employment opportunities are available in medical and dental offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, medical supply companies, and other health-care related organizations. Students should consult their advisor for information about course scheduling.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate competency in software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and business presentations
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Medical Terminology and Legal Issues and their importance in the medical office setting
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of a medical office software package to include setting up patient files, entering procedures and diagnoses, billing, filing insurance claims, and generating reports
  • Demonstrate knowledge of record keeping principles in both manual and electronic record keeping systems
  • Identify and utilize the required skills, knowledge, and technical information necessary to effectively function as an office assistant
  • Use written and oral discussion to discover and to articulate ideas (GE I. 1)
  • Demonstrate attitudes and skills that promote success in the workplace (GE V. 5)
