General Education Competencies

Vision Statement
The General Education component of the community college experience develops the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary for a lifetime of inquiry, discovery, and responsible citizenship.

General Education Competencies
Students of Western Piedmont Community College attain the following competencies:

General Education Competency 1: Communication
The ability to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner appropriate to the audience and within group settings.
1.1: Students will use written communication to articulate ideas by choosing language, style, technique, strategy, and organization appropriate to particular purposes, audiences, and occasions.
1.2: Students will use oral communication to articulate ideas by choosing language, style, technique, strategy, and organization appropriate to particular purposes, audiences, and occasions.
1.3: Students will work effectively and appropriately with others through collaboration and teamwork.

General Education Competency 2: Critical Thinking
The ability to apply critical thinking strategies to think logically and solve problems using analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
2.1: Students will identify problems and use appropriate evidence to distinguish relevant, objective and reliable facts, opinions, and assumptions to evaluate issues.
2.2: Students will apply problem solving techniques and skills by synthesizing information from various sources, drawing appropriate conclusions and/or formulating creative or divergent solutions.

General Education Competency 3: Mathematical Reasoning
The ability to apply fundamental mathematical concepts to solve problems.
3.1: Students will perform mathematical/algebraic operations.
3.2: Students will demonstrate mathematical skills necessary to solve real world problems.
